It’s the end of another year, and what a year it’s been! As always, the world of Vocaloid has been incredibly active, and I’m here to sum up just a few of the many highlights!
Let’s start off with the Vocaloid voicebank releases this year! It’s easy to forget just how many we get over the course of a year, so I’ve made a simple timeline to help!
1/4 Scale Miku released
Many figures of Miku were released this year, including 1/7 Racing Miku 2014 EV MIRAI, 1/8 Tell Your World, the Snow Bell figma and nendoroid, and 1/8 Racing Miku 2013 Sepang, but there’s one particular figure that has gained a lot of attention!
Standing proudly at a massive 42cm in height, FREEing’s ¼ scale Miku V3 figure stands heads and shoulders above the competition – literally! Sculpted by Hiroshi and based on Miku’s official V3 illustrator iXima’s artwork, the blends of soft colours and translucent parts make her a sight to behold.
Racing Miku 2016
The very first contest for Racing Miku’s 2016 design was held this year! 5 winners were picked, and their designs were combined to make one final costume – which was revealed very recently. Take a look at her below, and visit the website here! Mikufan have also summed up the figma and nendoroid sponsorship courses (although the figures themselves have not yet been unveiled).

Snow Miku 2016
The Snow Miku 2016 contest was also held this year, with Kotatsu Otogi winning both the Miku and Yukine categories!
The final illustration by Mamenomoto was revealed sometime after! Snow Miku’s figma and nendoroid counterparts were revealed back in November (official photos below), and you can visit the website here.
Magical Mirai 2015
Magical Mirai 2015 was held this year from September 4th – 6th, at the huge Nippon Budokan! The theme song was produced by KZ, titled ‘Hand in Hand’. This year’s costume was designed by shikimi, and the main visual illustrated by hoshima. A DVD and Blu-Ray release of the concert were revealed soon after, each available in standard editions and limited editions!
MIKU EXPO 2015 Shanghai
Held on June 26th – 27th, MIKU EXPO made its way to Shanghai this year! It was held at the Shanghai Fengyun E-SPORTS Arena, and had a setlist of 27 songs. Below was the main visual for the concert!
Miku tours America – MIKU EXPO 2016 dates, theme song and competition
Miku’s first American tour was announced this year! In 2016 she’ll be making her way through a number of countries and cities in North America, giving many fans the opportunity to see her live onstage! The theme song has been revealed to be ‘Blue Star’ by 8#Prince, which was uploaded to Miku’s official YouTube channel. There was also a song contest held, with the winner having their song performed live onstage! CircusP, a hugely popular Western producer, won the contest with his mature and catchy track ‘Ten Thousand Stars’. There were so many talented producers who entered the competition, including famous names such as Yunosuke, YZYX, nostraightanswer, MJQ and LamazeP – you can check out all of the songs entered here!
Project DIVA X
The next instalment in the Project DIVA series was revealed on Miku’s birthday! It’s titled ‘Project DIVA X’, and is scheduled for a Vita release on March 24th in Japan, with a PS4 release to follow sometime afterwards. Since the announcement, many songs and modules have been revealed, with a number of PVs being uploaded to demonstrate them. You can check out all of the PVs so far in order below!
Hatsune Miku x Namie Amuro collaboration
Celebrities often collaborate with Vocaloid – and this year was no exception! Namie Amuro, the hugely popular Japanese singer, collaborated with Miku in the song ‘B Who I Want 2 B’ (with vocal tuning by Mitchie M). They starred in an edition of fashion magazine NYLON (photos below), and also featured in their own animated music video. A promotional illustration by Persona artist Shigenori Soejima was also revealed for the collaboration – you can check them out below!
Hatsune Miku x Persona 4: Dancing All Night
Miku jumped into the world of Persona 4 this year, being added as DLC for the rhythm game spin-off Persona 4: Dancing All Night! Her appearance was the same as the design for the previously mentioned Namie Amuro collaboration, and featured her performing a remix of ‘Heaven’ by ATOLS (with vocal tuning by MJQ). You can check out the teaser PV below, as well as artwork and screenshots!
Honeyworks Anime Movie
An animated movie based on Honeyworks’ ‘Confession Executive Committee Love Series’ song series was announced! You can read more details and listen to the songlist here, or alternatively visit the official Japanese website here!
PowapowaP and Samfree
Sadly, this year was not without its darker moments. We lost two incredibly famous producers this year – PowapowaP and Samfree. Both were big names in the Vocaloid fanbase, remaining active until their final days.
IA/VT -colorful- released
At long last, the game ‘IA/VT –colorful-‘, a rhythm-action game by Marvelous based around IA, was released! The game had been delayed by almost exactly a year – originally scheduled for July 31st 2014, with a final release date of July 30th 2015. You can check out an official PV for the game below, as well as my photos of the limited edition ‘Crystal Box’ version!
Project Mirai DX released worldwide
Project Mirai DX was released on the 3DS system worldwide this year! It was initially released in Japan on May 28th, September 8th for North America, and September 11th for the PAL region. The game is essentially an updated version of Project Mirai 2, with all songs given 3DPVs, plus the added ‘Nice To Meet You Mr. Earthling‘ theme by PinocchioP. It was the first Project Mirai game to ever be released outside of Japan!
Whilst it is indeed impossible to show every song released this year, or indeed list all of my recommendations, I’ve instead chosen a few personal highlights of mine for the year! Some you’ll certainly recognise, and others you might not – each and every one of them are fantastic, and worth a listen! Sadly I’d love to feature more, and have likely forgotten some gems! As usual, all songs are linked to official uploads.
